Darkness and Romance

It's been all quiet on the Nuala front lately as I've been dealing with some personal tragedy -- writing about death and sex is a little less fun when you're dealing in death in real life.  The news came in the middle of my "March challenge" week, which ended early.

Regardless, after some much-needed time off of rest and relaxation, I'm back!  With all the vengeance of a sexy werewolf hunter tracking down her buff and bad-boy prey.  (Hm.  That sounds like a good story!  Rememberin' that one!)

In the time since my last post, I've been working my ass off and then not working my ass off, and sleeping and eating and writing.  I released a three-story series about a woman with prophetic powers falling in love with the devil -- who happens to love her back!  It's my second attempt at romantic erotica, and while I adore it, it hasn't seemed to be hitting the audiences like my "Fuckin'" sereies.  However, it has been a hell of a lot more fun to write!

So, what I'm saying is you should expect more romantic erotica from me!  Not saying I'm abandoning my more porny roots, but I'm expanding and experimenting, and I'm loving it.  I'm working on the second story in the "Love Stories from the End of the World" series -- a tale of a couple living through the zombie apocalypse, which I should be releasing tonight!

Otherwise, Wednesdays have been designated "novel days", where I'll be pounding out "The Desires of the Mage", the short-story-turned-novella I've been working on since I first started this adventure into erotica writing.

Anyway, that has been what's going on in Nuala-land.  Be sure to check out my "ebooks" tabs right above to see the up-to-date listing of all my stories!

The March Challenge

While I've been wishing something desperate to work on my longer stories exclusively, in the week I have not released anything I've seen a concerning drop in sales.  So, out of the interest of, uh, research, and 'because I goddamn can' I have posed myself a challenge:

Five days: five stories.  One story a day for March 5th through the 9th.  Each must be over 3,000 words long (three of which I am aiming for 5,000 words).  Three must include romance elements, and can be categorized as 'erotic romance'.  At least one must be fantasy, since my fantasy catalog is lacking.

I have until the 5th to outline, plot, or otherwise plan out these stories.  I can also work on covers if I choose to.  However, I cannot begin writing them until the 5th.  When the 5th comes, it's all writing, editing, cover design, and releasing.  If I do not release a title by midnight of each night, I've failed the challenge.

What will happen if I fail?  Well, I suppose I can't exactly dole out my own punishment, but I'm sure my girlfriend and fellow erotica author Toby Graham can think of something.  She's an imaginative girl.

If I don't fail, I'll have increased my catalog of books by 62.5%.  That's no number to balk at for me, either, especially considering I'm not exactly the most prolific of erotica authors.  I'm very thoughtful with my stories and dedicated to giving my readers the best possible tale I can write.  This is part of the challenge for me, as well:  I won't -- and, really, can't -- release something I am not happy with.  This is why my newest story, Phantgasm, has yet to be released.  With a mere 700 words to go, I'm slowly plodding out the best 700 words possible.

For me, this is a challenge of releasing quality work at a higher quantity than I have before.  Since beginning this journey into erotica I have released, at most, two short stories a week.  If I can increase my production of quality work, not only will have more stories for you, but working on a short story a week while maintaining my schedule for working on the erotic and romantic novellas I have planned won't be so daunting.

All in all, I hope this will be a learning experience.  Although I suspect I'll be in a frenzy for all of next week.  Wish me luck!

An Issue of Taste

I'm taking a step back from my normal posts to address an issue that has come out after the recent BookStrand removal of indie authors issue.  It's a subject I have remained mostly silent about, because I do not share the same opinion as a lot of other indie authors.  While the idea of censorship is, of course, concerning, that is not what upsets me most about all of this.

It's the use of the following Martin Niemöller quote:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

I've seen this used by more than one author in the discussion of the business choices BookStrand made, and in response to the pressure PayPal is putting on various websites.  The quote refers to the rise of Nazi power before and during World War II.  The people they came for were systematically murdered.

Now, some background:  With a name like Nuala you probably think I'm Irish as all hell.  I'm not.  My family is German.  I am German-American.  And my family has been very entrenched in WWII history and how it affected our family, most of whom were still in Germany at the time.  Even if they were not, however, I absolutely do not see how anyone could think that is an appropriate quote to use to rally the smut slinger troupes.

The fact is, our ebooks and accounts are being removed.  And, yes, that sucks.  But PayPal, BookStrand, the credit card companies, et al are still in their legal rights.  As a minority of erotica writers are we being persecuted to some extent?  Yes.  But at the end of the day, while this effects our money, our jobs, and parts of our life, this is not Nazi Germany.  This is not World War II.  We are not Jews, Socialists, underprivileged Germans, trade unionists, or the undesirables lost in a country run by a fascist regime.  Our lives are not on the line.  It can be questioned if even our rights are.  We made the choice to work in a risky industry, after all, and no one is breaking the law here.

So, please, think before you spout out propaganda.  While your outrage is, in many cases, justified, it is, in no way, shape or form, all right to trivialize a horror like the Holocaust by comparing this.  Make your point some other way.  Find some other quote, but don't touch this one.

There are lines even those of us who skirt the issues of taste should not cross.

This is one of them.

Ghost Fuckers

The third title of the "Fucking Paranormal" series of short stories it out!  This time, our heroine, Liana, takes on two brother ghosts who might be dead, but damn! they still know how to please a lady.

The story is available at: AmazonBarnes and NobleSmashwordsAll Romance eBooks, and BookStrand.

With the release of #3, I will be bundling and releasing Fucking Werewolves, Fucking Vampires, and Fucking Ghosts as a set.  Pricing has yet to be determined, although will probably be set between $3.99 - $4.99.  The current release date is set to be uploaded during the day on Tuesday.

Tonight my foray will be into fantasy once again, this time with dragons, princesses, and dashing young knights!  It might be a bit more traditional then I typically write... or maybe not.  The cogs in my head are certainly turning about how to turn you on, I can promise that!

Wolves and Girls

I love retelling traditional tales, and while my interest normally strays toward folklore, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to twist Little Red Riding Hood into something wicked and sexy.

Little Red is a young woman in this story, and when she comes upon a werewolf while bringing food to her elderly grandmother, she bargains with him using anything she can -- including her body.  Of course, there's no guarantee that this wolf will keep his promise.

Red: A Twisted Tale is available in the follow places:  AmazonBarnes and NobleSmashwordsAll Romance eBooks, and BookStrand.

I have to say, this story has got me thinking of other tales I can turn -- although none are ones I plan on working on right now!  With my Netbook (and main work computer) out of commission the past few days, I started a few more stories on my laptop.  Now that my little word processor is back in business, I find myself drowning in a sea of four unfinished stories, all of which are aiming to be 10,000-word tales!

What does this mean?  Well, I have my work cut out for me!  It also means there might be a hold on shorter stories until I get something done!  Granted, I won't make that a promise.  I can't help it, after all, when inspiration strikes!

Dirty Little Wicked Things

What happens when three witches evoke the goddess of love?  You'll be sure to find out in my newest story, Three Witch Spread, which is available at the following places:

Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, All Romance eBooks, and BookStrand.

It's a girl on girl on girl story, which is a bit different for me, but just as steamy hot, I promise!

My current writing it taking me to more involved stories, although I won't be abandoning 3,000-word trysts completely.  Obviously I haven't, what with the release of the above, and the impending release of Fucking Ghosts this Wednesday.  (Wednesday is the Fucking Paranormal day, it seems.)

I've already developed the plot for the series of three longer werewolf tales, and one for a longer project of six stories I plan on keeping under wraps until it's out.  As much as I love the porn scene, the overlap of ideas sometimes makes me nervous, and I'm bound to keep my ideas horded close to me like a dragon and her gold.

Except, you know, my gold is porn.

There are weirder things, okay?

Vamp Attack!

Vampires are probably my least favorite of things that go bump in the night -- but that doesn't mean I'm not going to write about it!

A sequel to Fucking Werewolves, in Fucking Vampires, Liana meets her match (yet again) while asking one too many questions in La Maison du Sang, a night club known for it's interesting patrons.

It's available at the following places: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, All Romance eBooks, and BookStrand.

Today I'll be working on my next story, titled Three Witch Spread, which will be a magical little lesbian romp, and will prove that you should never evoke Aphrodite unless you have some wild sex in mind!  Look for it's release within the next two days!

On another note, Werewolves seems to be my post popular of stories, and, well, it was definitely my favorite to write!  That makes me think some more wolfy action is in order!  How does 10,000 words about a woman and her werewolf lover sound?  Because goddamn, that's what I want to make happen... once, or twice, or three times.  If you get what I'm saying.  (I'm saying series.)

My only regret with this is I'll have to put The Desires of the Mage, and the other long-term erotica project I have on the back burner for a bit.  But, hey, I gotta do what I love!  And I do love canines!
